Ever since I wrote “The Stars Don’t Give a Shit” I’ve had this video in my head, because the song is inspired by a real night that I went down to this exact beach and screamed at the stars for help. I wasn’t wearing a tuxedo that night, but in my own emotional reality I may has well have been wearing one, because it really felt that dramatic. Some small part of me did think that the voice of James Earl Jones would boom down at me (just like what happens to Simba in the Lion King), and I’d feel empowered and know exactly what to do next. For a minute all I got was silence, but then I did actually hear something. A cough. Two jovial dudes were sitting in the shadows, smoking a joint, watching me the whole time. Feeling the need to justify my talking to the sky, I yelled across the beach “MY GIRLFRIEND CHEATED ON ME!” One of them inhaled before screaming back “YOU’LL GET OVER IT!” It’s funny because it took me re-telling this story right now to realize that maybe the stars DO give a shit. Because this was actually amazing advice. Very un-Hollywood and un-sexy, no tuxedos involved… but wise nonetheless, and delivered right on cue. I did get over it. But I’m glad I disqualified the stoner’s advice and allowed myself to feel completely abandoned for a minute. It forced me to answer my own questions. Cut out all the noise in my head from other people’s thoughts and opinions, and tune into my own wisdom. That’s why I love this song. Because it reminds me of that, and it’s a reminder I need all the time. I don’t know if you need to take a minute to tune into your own wisdom today but if you do, do it in black tie attire on a beautiful beach, or on top of the Empire State building or something. Be dramatic, live in your own movie, write your own lines.
